Bacterial cell division: A moving MinE sweeper boggles the MinD
نویسنده
چکیده
Placement of the division site in Escherichia coli is determined in part by three Min proteins. Recent studies have shown that MinE, previously thought to form a static ring near the division site at the midcell position, actually joins MinC and MinD in their rapid oscillation between the cell poles.

MinD and MinE interact with anionic phospholipids and regulate division plane formation in Escherichia coli.
The Min proteins (MinC, MinD, and MinE) form a pole-to-pole oscillator that controls the spatial assembly of the division machinery in Escherichia coli cells. Previous studies identified that interactions of MinD with phospholipids positioned the Min machinery at the membrane. We extend these studies by measuring the affinity, kinetics, and ATPase activity of E. coli MinD, MinE, and MinDE bindi...

In bacterial cell division MinD plays a pivotal role, selecting the mid-cell over other sites. With MinC, MinD forms a non-specific inhibitor of division, that interacts with FtsZ. Specificity is provided by MinD's interaction with MinE at the mid-cell. We have solved the crystal structure of MinD-1 from Archaeoglobus fulgidus to 2.6 A by multiple anomalous dispersion. MinD is a classic nucleot...
متن کاملDivision accuracy in a stochastic model of Min oscillations in Escherichia coli.
Accurate cell division in Escherichia coli requires the Min proteins MinC, MinD, and MinE as well as the presence of nucleoids. MinD and MinE exhibit spatial oscillations, moving from pole to pole of the bacterium, resulting in an average MinD concentration that is low at the center of the cell and high at the poles. This concentration minimum is thought to signal the site of cell division. Det...
متن کاملIntracellular Pattern Formation: A Spatial Stochastic Model of Bacterial division site selection proteins MinCDE
Bacterial division site selection is regulated by members of the Min-protein system. In Escherichia coli MinC, MinD, and MinE oscillate from pole to pole of the cell with a periodicity of approximately 40 sec. The region of lowest concentration of the Z-Ring inhibitor, MinC occurs at the center of the cell, confining the placement of FtsZ and thus defining the cell division site. In addition to...
متن کاملMultiple modes of interconverting dynamic pattern formation by bacterial cell division proteins.
Min proteins of the Escherichia coli cell division system oscillate between the cell poles in vivo. In vitro on a solid-surface supported lipid bilayer, these proteins exhibit a number of interconverting modes of collective ATP-driven dynamic pattern formation including not only the previously described propagating waves, but also near uniformity in space surface concentration oscillation, prop...
